Men's Health Magazine - February 1999 We've always though "extra-large" condoms were like $100 bills: Most guys carry them only to show off. But a yearlong study at La Trobe University in Australia found that men with slightly thicker (not longer) penises may actually need larger condoms. Of the 184 men studied, those whose penises had a circumference greater than 6 inches (5.2 inches was average) were three times more likely to break regular condoms during sex than the men with thinner penises were. "One size does not fit all," says Anthony Smith, Ph.D., author of the study. "Condoms must fit snugly enough to stay on, but they shouldn't be over stretched."
To find your girth, wrap a cloth measuring tape around your erect penis 1 inch up from the base. If the measurement is more than 5 1/4 inches, you should try a larger condom. Models from Trojan, Crown, and other makers are available in drugstores or from Condomania, (800) 926-6366 or at Condomania.
